About Paul Ripley

Paul’s career in driver training extends to an unprecedented forty years. During this time, he has become a world-respected authority on safer driving and driver education. His extensive experience and expertise have been widely acknowledged as unequalled by his industry peers, his corporate and private clients and by the print, online and broadcast media. Paul holds an unrivalled number of academic and driving qualifications and has advised and consulted for the UK Department for Transport and Driving Standards Agency, police forces, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and numerous motor manufacturers.

He has the distinction of being called ‘God’s Chauffeur’ by The Daily Telegraph, the UK’s best-selling broadsheet newspaper, in which he wrote a hugely popular weekly safer driving column for almost a decade. He has also appeared on national and international TV and was known as ‘The Driving Doctor’ during his role as the driving safety expert presenter on Channel 4 TV’s Driven programme. This provided the inspiration for the title of his company. He is also the author of the book Expert Driving (published in 2002 but still in circulation today due to demand) and has written countless articles for leading publications such as Auto Express, EVO, Business Car Manager and The AA Magazine.

Paul’s immense contribution to driver safety was recognised by His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, who awarded him the coveted Prince Michael Road Safety Award in 2000. He has also been a senior contributor to RoadSafe, the Prince Michael Road Safety Group.

Paul is the founder of many companies dedicated to driver coaching including Paul Ripley Driving Courses, Paul Ripley Promosport, Road and Track Performance Driving School, Paul Ripley Media, the Master Drivers Guild, Advanced Road Drivers of Canada and Driver Risk Dynamics Limited.

Already acknowledged as a standard-setter in the global driver safety market, Paul was the first to recognise and embrace the value of a new system that could combine telematics data acquisition and online, perpetual driver training for the fleet, insurance and telematics industries, as well as for motor vehicle OEMs. He then set about creating The Driving Doctor’s® unique evaluation and education programmes combining data-driven, innovative digital tools and best practice behavioural change techniques (BCTs) to produce coaching methods that address the attitudes and behaviours crucial to safe and efficient vehicle use. As Paul continues to advocate, “It is not skill or experience that dictates a driver’s safety, but their attitude and behaviour, also known as the human factors. And as 95 per cent of all accidents are caused by driver error, 95 per cent of all accidents are avoidable”.

As CEO, Paul is supported by a team of experts from the fleet, TSP, IT, road traffic and health and safety law professions, transport psychology, driver coaching and motor industries who combined, have more than 100 years of management experience in their specialist fields.
